Three billion cups consumed daily. This widespread consumption drives heavy pesticide use to protect coffee plants, especially in large plantations vulnerable to pests and diseases. In Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer, pesticide use surged by 210% over the past decade, with an estimated 39 million kilograms applied annually. Since 2019, Brazil has approved 500 new pesticides, over one-third of which are banned in the European Union due to their toxicity.

In Vietnam’s Central Highlands, a survey of 150 coffee farmers found that while most use mechanical weeding and follow proper pesticide protocols, about 6% still apply herbicides. Intercropping practices leading to contamination concerns.

A recent study analyzing 900 coffee samples in Egypt found pesticide residues in 15% of green coffee and 24% of roasted coffee, with contamination highest in coffee capsules at 66%. Some pesticide levels, such as chlorpyrifos, exceeded maximum residue limits.

The heavy pesticide reliance harms ecosystems and human health, causing skin disorders, respiratory problems, organ damage, and even cancer in coffee-growing regions.

Addressing pesticide use in coffee production is critical to safeguarding biodiversity, protecting farmers’ health, and ensuring safe coffee for consumers worldwide.
